We Mapped Every Local Government in New York

On August 7, 2026 we finished loading the boundaries of every general-purpose local government in New York State. There are 1,679 of them: 62 counties, 594 cities and villages, and 1,023 towns.

Until then, Agora''s local coverage meant New York City. An address outside the five boroughs had a state government and a national government in the app, and nothing local at all.

Two things we found while doing it

County government was missing from our model entirely. That matters, because for a great many New Yorkers the county is the government that runs the services they actually touch.

And a large share of the state''s land is unincorporated, meaning nobody there lives in a city or a village. Those addresses used to resolve to nothing local. They now resolve to their town and their county, which is the honest answer.

What it gives you, and what it does not

It gives every address in the state a local government with a name and a boundary. It does not yet give all of them a list of officeholders, and until it does, an area shows what we have rather than pretending to more.

We are filling those rosters where there is a reason to. No national source exists to do it automatically, which is a fact about American local government rather than about our engineering.
