Durability tends to come from narrowing the broad democratic ambition down to a fundable transactional niche; what survives is rarely what the field set out to build.
The pattern
Civic platforms that last often do so by shrinking. The sweeping ambition, reconnect citizens to power and transform participation, gives way to a narrow, fundable function, a service request or a single transaction, that a customer will actually pay for. The platform survives, but as a smaller thing than it set out to be.
How it shows up
A broad civic-engagement pitch that, a few years later, is a 311 or service-request tool; a democratic mission statement attached to a product about operational efficiency; survival by acquisition into a government-software suite.
What Agora does about it
Agora's guard against narrowing is to keep the participation channel itself the product, not a fundable side-feature it decays into. Participation stays free and central, and the aim is to sustain the broad ambition, a real channel between citizens and officials, rather than trade it down to a transactional niche that happens to pay.
